PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Fraser River Discovery Centre offers professional development workshops for educators interested in integrating place-based learning into their classroom practice. Our Pro-D workshops support BC’s science curriculum and core competencies; the skills are applicable for every grade! Place-based learning brings topics to life by connecting learners to the places and issues relevant to their lives, as well as boosting student achievement. Join us for a workshop that will help you make your classroom and community a better place.
Workshops are available online, at your location, or at the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Workshops at your location will have an additional mileage fee of $0.90 / km driving distance between FRDC and your location.

Place-based Learning Along the Lower Fraser
Dive into the theory and practice of place-based learning in an urban area.
In this workshop, teachers will explore concepts and techniques related to place-based learning along the Lower Fraser River. Teaching place-based learning in an urban area means grappling with the complex systems in a metropolis, so the workshop begins with an overview of the principles of urban environmental education. Teachers will then learn a versatile place-based learning tool that can be applied to all grades and a diversity of curricular units. The workshop ends with a discussion of curricular links and evaluation strategies.
The skills learnt in this workshop support BC’s science curriculum, as well as many core competencies.
Duration: 90 minutes
Grade Level: all grades
Meet Your Nature Neighbours
Learn how to set up a simple and fun biological survey of your local area!
In this workshop, teachers will acquire the skills necessary to conduct a simple biological survey of their local area. Teachers will explore surveys, the difference between native and introduced species, how to use the Seek app to identify species, and the process of setting up a survey area. After the program, teachers will be able to go out with their classes to conduct the survey.
The skills developed through this workshop fully support BC’s science curriculum, as you will be able to lead your class through the scientific process: questioning and predicting, planning and conducting, processing and analyzing data and information, all the way to communicating.
PLEASE NOTE: For this workshop, participants will need a mobile device or tablet with the free app Seek by iNaturalist downloaded. This device needs to be separate from the one running the virtual meeting.
Duration: 1 – 1.5 hour(s)
