New West Cultural Crawl
Presented by Arts New West, the New West Cultural Crawl is an annual festival that showcases the incredible artistic talents of our community. The Fraser River Discovery Centre has offered to host the New Westminster Photography Club’s exhibit and workshops as part of this year’s New West Cultural Crawl.
“Photography Is Spelled With An Eye” Exhibit
Intentionally cryptic, the title exploits the vagaries of the English language to suggest that images cast a spell on the eye of both the creator and the beholder, creating a unique shared experience. The exhibit includes a selection of favorite photographic images created by members of the New Westminster Photography Club over the last two years; representing what “caught the eye” of the photographer at that moment in space and time. It’s expected that about 12 photographers will participate and present approximately 30 images.
The exhibition explores the use of the camera (or smartphone) to share the photographer’s unique ideas, feelings, and stories. The challenge is to go beyond just recording a scene and to use creative techniques and artistic vision to convey deeper meanings; to create images that make people think, feel emotions, and communicate personal or universal truths in a unique way. To share what the photographer felt as well as what they saw. The images include 8”x10” and 11″x14″ photographic prints mounted in plain black or white mattes. The images are unframed. There will be two workshops associated with the exhibition.
Black & White with Your Smartphone Workshop with Nancy M.

This introductory presentation will explore how to see in tones, use light, and make simple edits with in-phone editing tools—turning everyday snapshots into expressive photographs. No technical background required—just an interest in seeing the world a little differently and a willingness to play.
